Humidity, irritabile toddler, tired hubby, looming long trip

If it sounds like this is to be a complaint entry, you got it. I won't be insulted if you ignore it and go to someone's blog who is in a better mood. I just spent a couple hours trying to get my two year old to hold still long enough to fall asleep. This is after church where he acted so tired he could hardly stay upright and then fell alseep on the 15 minutes trip home. 2 and 1/2 hours of fussy kid, in humid weather is awful!! i am not however willing to give up since if I do he will think he can get his own way all the time. I can't let that happen. Now he is finally asleep and it is time fo rhim to get up. If I wake him he'll be cranky. If I don't he won't be tired to go to sleep at bedtime. Oh well at least he should be wide awake fo revening church.
In addition, we are T minus 2 1/2 days to his first airplane ride to Florida. I am not looking forward to the trip believe me. Several days in a hotel room with a 2 year old. The last couple days shouldn't be half bad since there will be two parents and we are going to see dolphins, rockets and maybe water. The first several it's me, a toddler and an outdoor pool. That means if it rains I am in big trouble. DH has a convention and I tried really hard to convince him to let us stay home to save money but MIL got wind of it and paid for our tickets. Since his is courtesy of the company as is the hotel room and car except for the last two days my we can't afford it argument went flat. I'm sure I would hate to stay home without him but I'm not sure going with him will be alot of fun. Oh well, guess fun is not the point of life is it!

our grandson chase baby is 2 and 1/2 years old and he falls asleep well for us.. we do not hold him or rock him to sleep.. he is put down in his bed for a nap and we tell him.. it is naptime now.. when you awaken we will do an activity ( or he gets a treat) or sometimes we tell him nothing.. he used to be a terror to go to bed.. doc found he had an ear infection.. now that it has been cleared up and he wears hats over his ears.. no more trouble.. i agree with your thinking... they act better at home... perhaps he will surprise you... we use portable dvd player in the van and chase baby loves woody and watches toy story..... when he acts up,, we simply ignore him.. and he stops.. hth.

Tips for taking an airplane trip with a 2 yr old:

    1. Stickers! They're cheap, easy to pack, and will sometimes distract a little kid who doesn't get to see them very often.
    2. Go to a thrift store and get a couple of new, small toys. A new toy will sometimes distract for longer than an old toy. But then, of course, you're sending a message that the kid gets something new when you need him to be good.
    3. Give him his sippy cup or something else to drink and swallow during takeoff and landing.
    4. Good portable snacks: fruit leather and pretzel goldfish. Also, my 2 yr old likes hard boiled eggs. He calls them "airplane eggs" because we usually eat them when we go on airplane flights.
    5. Some public libraries in Florida will issue temporary cards to visitors. A trip to the library is a good distraction, and you can get videos and books that he's never seen before.

Rose had her first plane trip at 2 and 3/4 and she did quite well. The best thing we got for her was a little party pack of playdoh, that had 9 colors and a playdoh "jackknife" that had different things you could push the playdoh through. We had also brought a laminated piece of cardboard to be her rolling surface and put that on the dinner tray.

We also brought a couple books, a coloring book and crayons, a couple little windup toys (sort of like the chicks and bunnies you can get at Easter), that don't go very far but jerk around a lot and sure seem to amuse a toddler. She also had heavy string and big beads and she would string and unstring those. We had a bit more room than in coach as DH used his miles for us to go first class, but I think this would work in coach, too. We made sure she had something to drink on take off and landing. She did great, the flight attendant commented on what an angel she was, both ways. Of course, that may just be Rose. She's sweet tempered.

Don't forget the tricks for popping his ears on the plane - chewing gum, and yawning.
