The saga countinues

September 11th, 2006 at 01:59 pm

We live in a beautiful spot. It is close enough to a small city that we can shop (some) and my DH can get to work in under 20 minutes and it is in the country enough that we enjoy trees (I like raking leaves with a little one) and grass (DH mows) and all kinds of little animals to watch as well as a couple not so little ones (the bear was spotted near DH work not here) I forgot about the disadvantage of fall (my favorite season) I found evidence of mice in our house. I miss having a dog!!!! She never let anything like that around even when all she did was sleep 23/7. I dutifully bought and set traps, impressing my DH with knowing what to use as bait (pbutter)and where to set them. I left the counter undisturbed (good excuse for a pizza night) and waited to see what would happen. This morning I had two dead mice. At that point I informed my DH that disposal was his department. YUCK!!! I felt really bad, they only wanted what we want, warmth and a dry place to raise little ones. I could have spared the food. I liked it better whne th eanimals we kept made those decisions for me!! The traps are set in case they weren't alone (and mice rarely are)

Nanamom your living situation sounds great - and much like my own - Hubster drives 18 minutes to work now. No bears spotted yet, but I have deer, raccoons & a red fox that uses my creek behind the house in the evenings on a regular basis and the road in front of my sunroom every morning about 6:20 right before daybreaks over the trees here in my little valley! Gorgeous and lots of fun to watch over a cup a'joe!

No mice spotted yet this season but just yesterday I told husband that I thought we had a squirrel in the attic. He checked and it was just one on top of the roof over where I sit at the computer desk. I could hear those little paws scratching at something!!

And here the scorpions are starting to surface more often so be careful little footsies where you stand barefooted!

Thanks for the mice reminder I might just go set my traps and see what happens. I'm like you, I often feel guilty over catching even a butterfly in my truck grill! Frown

My home is located similarly (and I love it!!) and we also get mice here. I do keep two barn cats and they have done a great job of keeping the mice population down.

Mice are fast multipliers so you are wise to reset the traps.

Also, if you can determine how they are getting in...(are there any holes in vent screens, or cracks in exterior walls) you can plug it /them off using steel wool. (Mice cant chew through this)

    Good luck!!

I love my outdoor cat for this very reason..not mine really (I don't feed her, didn't bring her), but she woyldn't let a rodent live near us!

unfortunatly she ran out of rodents, and moved on to birds, I need to do something about that. (their seems to be a cattapillar explosion)

I live up on a bluff near a major river. I have 5 acres of land. I to love the nature scene. I have seen a bear on my property as well as deer wild turkeys woodchucks and assorted other things.

As much as I love the house. I am considering selling it. It is 2600 sq ft and I am now a widow living alone. This is a really hard decision.

I love my 10 minute commute to work

My cat will catch mice that come in somehow thru the basement, but the problem is, unless i remember to close the basement door each evening, she'll bring the live mouse upstairs to my bedroom.

I set traps reluctantly, but mice can do lots of damage to electrical wiring and carry disease. Just this morning i had to rescue one caught, but not killed in a mouse trap i set the night before. I released it, figuring if it fought to survive overnight as it had, it deserved its freedom, tho whether it will survive with its wound is debatable.

If you really feel bad about killing the mice, you can get Humana traps that capture them live. I've used them and taken the critters outside. Of course, you have to be sure you've blocked off their access into the house.
